Cadair's Most Beautiful Ascent

SKU Walk 19
Price

£7.00

Undoubtedly the most beautiful of the paths up stunning Cadair Idris (Chair of Idris) is the Llanfihangel-y-Pennant route which starts in a remote valley and immediately feels different to the much busier Minffordd or Pony Paths. The early stages follow gentle tracks and grassy trails alongside the Afon Cadair with a real sense of isolation and history. This ascent to the 2,939-foot ridge summit at Penygadairs is more forgiving at first as it passes Mary Jones' Cottage. However, don’t be fooled - this still a long mountain day classed as strenuous overall. Higher up, the route joins the Pony Path for the final push. The terrain becomes steeper, rockier, and more exposed as you approach the summit ridge. The last section requires care on loose stone and uneven ground, especially in poor weather before gradually transitioning into a rugged mountain environment with wide-ranging views across southern Eryri and, on a clear day, out to the coast. There is a welcome twist as the walk is circular with a descent via the grassy Pencoed ridge. There are toilets at the start which is at a small, free car park next to St Michael's Church.
