Rapidly becoming a walking highlight of Wales is the 128-mile Llwybr Cadfan pilgrimage route which begins at St Cadfan’s Church in Tywyn and finishes at Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island). This is an opportunity to complete the atmospheric opening stage. Much work has been done lately by the Diocese of Bangor with the journey way-marked and divided into 12 stages. Walkers may buy a passport for £5 at St Cadfan's which can then be stamped at 26 ancient churches, holy wells and points of interest along the whole way. The church, which is a short walk from Tywyn Station, was founded more than 1500 years ago by St Cadfan himself. It houses the ninth century Cadfan Stone, which is inscribed with the oldest known written Welsh, as well as a remarkable Crying Knight statue. The walk continues over rolling green hills to the peaceful church of St Mary and St Egryn, before taking in the sea air at the remote coastal church that is St Celynin at Llangelynin where a minibus will take everyone back to Barmouth. One of two stretches can be muddy in wet weather. There are toilets at the start Public Transport - The 8.54am train from Barmouth to Tywyn, single ticket, returning by minibus.
