Afon Ysgethin and into the hills (JS & PS)
£5.00
Ascent (Feet): 1152
Following registration at 9.10, take the G23 bus from Jubilee Road at 9.33 to Talybont – getting off at Tony’s Restaurant, where someone will meet you to take you to the start of the walk at the Ysgethin Inn carpark (for those driving, you can meet in the Ysgethin car park at 9.50).
This is a circular walk up along the Afon Ysgethin into the hills above Talybont, via Erddyn lake then over to Pont Scethin Bridge and back. This splendid upland walk starts by tracing the Afon Ysgethin through woodland before exploring the rough moorland above the village of Tal-y-Bont, following old trackways and visiting a secluded lake. The area is scattered with evidence of human occupation over thousands of years.
From the car park we walk up through Ysgethin Woods to the Grade Two listed Pont Fadog, continuing along a track to pass Llyn Erddyn nestling below the craggy Llawlech ridge. We turn to follow the track over Pont Scethin, an ancient arched pack-horse bridge, once the main route from Harlech to Dolgellau and used to carry the London to Harlech mail coach. Bandits frequently raided the coaches as they crossed the bridge, and the nearby coaching inn that once stood on the lower slopes of Moelfre.
From here we take the route to Cors Y Gedol, back to the top of Ysgethin Woods for our return to the start.
It's a great, moderate walk but with fabulous views over the coast and the added bonus of finishing at a pub for those wishing to take advantage of it.
