NEW Barmouth's Jesuit Connection (A Poet, a Sailor and Others!) (SR)
SKU Walk25
Price
£5.00
Ascent (Feet): 984
This leisurely walk around Barmouth and Llanaber traces the 170+ year connection of the Jesuits (a Roman Catholic order of priests) with Barmouth. It visits some of the buildings associated with the 'Barmouth Villa' an annual summer activity holiday for Jesuit students based at St Beuno's in North Wales. You will hear about two of the famous students who participated: The Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, and the former Royal Navy Commander Henry Schomberg Kerr, 'The Sailor Jesuit', and his encounter with the local fisherman on the sandbank in the estuary. The walk is based on original information kindly obtained from the British Jesuit Archives.
